Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Adoption of the Protocol for the Amendment to the "International Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against the Safety of Maritime Navigation, 1988" and to the "Protocol for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against the Safety of Fixed Platforms Located on the Continental Shelf, 1988"

  1. Japan welcomes the adoption of the Protocol for the Amendment to the "International Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against the Safety of Maritime Navigation, 1988" and to the "Protocol for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against the Safety of Fixed Platforms Located on the Continental Shelf, 1988" at the diplomatic conference of the International Maritime Organization held on October 14 (Fri).
  2. The protocol contributes to the prevention of unlawful acts using vessels at sea and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and Japan values the adoption as a meaningful move to demonstrate stance of the international community that it is unified to tackle measures against international terrorism and nonproliferation.
  3. Following this adoption, Japan will proceed with necessary examinations toward its conclusion and, at the same time, hopes that other state parties and international organizations will also promote their efforts for the same purpose.
