Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Terrorism Incident in Bangladesh

  1. The Government of Japan expresses its strong indignation at the terrorism incident by hand grenades which took place in Habiganj District, Sylhet Division, Bangladesh during a political rally of the Awami League on January 27, claiming at least 5 lives including former Finance Minister H.M.S. Kibria and injuring numerous citizens. The Government of Japan extends its condolences to the bereaved families as well as its heartfelt sympathy for those who were killed and injured in this incident of terrorism.

  2. The Government of Japan urges the Government of Bangladesh to immediately probe into a series of terrorism incidents including this incident. The Government of Japan hopes that the people of Bangladesh will be united to overcome political violence and restore law and order. The Government of Japan will continue supporting the efforts of Bangladesh towards further promoting firm democracy in their country.

  3. The Government of Japan upholds its position that terrorism in any forms can never be justified and firmly condemns again any acts of terrorism.
