Emergency Aid to Nicaragua for Torrential Rain Disaster

  1. On July 8 (Thu), the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency assistance in kind (blankets, tents, electric generators, sleeping mats, soap, etc.), equivalent to approximately 11.5 million yen, to the Government of the Republic of Nicaragua, which has sustained damage from a torrential rainstorm.

  2. Since June 24, torrential rains hit Nicaragua, mainly on the central-northern part and the North Atlantic Autonomous Region of the country. As of July 6, the subsequent landslides and swelling and flooding of rivers left 25 people dead and 18,357 afflicted. At present, those affected are taking shelter as evacuees. The Government of the Republic of Nicaragua has been making rehabilitation efforts on its own, and has also requested emergency assistance from the international community.

  3. The Government of Japan has decided to extend this emergency aid from a humanitarian point of view and taking into account the friendly relations with the Republic of Nicaragua.
