Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Repeal of the US 1916 Anti-Dumping Act
December 4, 2004
- On December 3 (local time), the Anti-Dumping Act of 1916 was repealed as President George W. Bush signed a bill to repeal the Act. Japan welcomes the realization of its repeal as such.
- The Anti-Dumping Act of 1916 was ruled inconsistent with the WTO agreements in September 2000, and Japan has reiterated its request to the United States to repeal the Act immediately. The Government of Japan therefore recognizes the repeal as the result of the Government of the United States' efforts to work on the US Congress to implement the WTO recommendation, taking into account the request by the Government of Japan.
- Japan will continue to request the US to immediately rectify other US laws and regulations that were also ruled inconsistent with the WTO agreements and to bring such rules into consistency with the agreements.
(Note 1) Damage Recovery Act concerning the Anti-Dumping Act of 1916 of the United States passed the Japanese diet and will enter into effect soon to protect those who suffer from damages by lawsuits based on the Anti-Dumping Act of 1916, after the WTO ruling of its inconsistency with the WTO agreements.
