Emergency Assistance for Improvement of the Humanitarian Situation in the Darfur Region in the Western Part of Sudan

- The Government of Japan decided on October 26 (Tue) to provide emergency assistance of 11.5 million dollars (1,265 million yen) through the Office of the UHNCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund), IOM (International Organization for Migration) and ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) for internally displaced persons in the Darfur region in the western part of Sudan and Sudanese refugees in Chad.
- Besides this emergency assistance, the Government of Japan is also considering extending food aid and assistance to increase food production through the WFP (World Food Programme) and FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization).
- The 11.5 million dollar emergency assistance is part of the pledge made by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in his address at the UN General Assembly that the Government of Japan would provide additional assistance in the amount of 15 million dollars (total assistance amount to 21 million dollars including Japan so far provided).
