Statement by the Press Secretary / Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize for 2004 to Professor Wangari Maathai

- Japan congratulates Professor Wangari Maathai, Assistant Minister for Environment and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kenya, on the Awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize.
- Prof. Maathai has dedicated herself to democracy, human rights and women's rights in particular as well as sustainable development, while advocating the issue of environmental conservation not only in Kenya, her home country, but also in the entire African continent.
- Prof. Maathai is the first African woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, which will certainly accord hope and courage to all the people in Africa.
- Japan has been actively tackling those issues including sustainable development and democracy to which Prof. Maathai has been committed herself for a long time. In this regard, Japan praises Prof. Maathai on the Awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize.
