July 11, 2003

  1. On July 11 (Fri), the Government of Japan and the United Nations (UN) decided to extend a total of 1,335,000 dollars in assistance through the Trust Fund for Human Security for the project "Managing Water and Energy Services for Poverty Eradication in Rural Gambia" to be implemented by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA).

  2. This project aims at providing support to the rural communities of The Gambia in reducing poverty through integrated management of water and energy services. The project has three main components: (i) provision of sustainable water and energy services managed by a community-based structure, (ii) creation of economic assets by promoting productive applications and income generation activities: and (iii) strengthening of local capacities involved in water and energy services and income generation activities.

  3. This project is expected to contribute to the efficient use of water and energy based on the community, increase of opportunities for income generation, and ultimately poverty reduction in the targeted villages.
