Provision of Medical Equipment and Materials to Taiwan to Cope with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)

June 6, 2003

  1. On June 6 (Fri), the Government of Japan decided to provide Taiwan with medical equipment and materials, equivalent to a total of 56 million yen, consisting of 50,000 medical protective suits, 500 anti-dust masks and 2,500 bags of replacement filters for the masks, through the Interchange Association to cope with the current situation of SARS in Taiwan.

  2. Since the first case of SARS was identified in March this year, the infection has been confirmed in almost every part of Taiwan. The Taiwanese authorities announced that, as of June 5, there were 677 SARS cases and 81 deaths reported in Taiwan.

  3. Japan is highly concerned about the spread of SARS in Taiwan because of its geographical proximity and the frequent exchange of visits between Japan and Taiwan. Japan hopes that through this provision of medical equipment and materials, following the recent dispatch of an expert team, the spread of SARS in Taiwan will be stopped as soon as possible, leading to the protection of the health of the Japanese, including many of those residing in Taiwan.
