Assistance for Illicit Small Arms Control in Kosovo

  1. On April 28 (Mon), the Government of Japan and the United Nations (UN) decided to extend an assistance amounting to 1.03 million US dollars through the Trust Fund for Human Security to the project "Illicit Small Arms Control Programme" to be implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kosovo, Serbia and Montenegro.

  2. The project, aimed to restrain the accumulation and spread of a significant number of illicit small arms and light weapons which are one of the main causes of crimes and violence in Kosovo, will help community development in exchange for the collection of light weapons and also raise well as public awareness. Japanese personnel will participate in the implementation of the project as UN volunteers. It is expected that the project will improve security situation there and pave the way toward sustainable peace with the participation of Kosovo citizens.
