Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Situation in Yugoslavia

  1. The Government of Japan welcomes the adoption and proclamation at the Federal Assembly of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia on February 4 (Tue) of the Constitutional Charter to reorganize the present Federal Republic of Yugoslavia into a state union.

  2. In particular, Japan expresses deep respect for each of the leaders of Yugoslavia and Dr. Javier Solana, High representative for EU Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), who have exerted strenuous efforts toward the reorganization of the Federation.

  3. From the viewpoint of promotion of the stability and development of the Southeastern Europe as a whole, Japan also welcomes the reorganization of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia into a loose-knit state union consisting of Serbia and Montenegro, and will continue to provide cooperation for stability and prosperity in Southeastern Europe in cooperation with the international community.
