Financial Assistance to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria

- On March 22 (Fri), the Government of Japan decided to extend grant aid of 11 million dollars as a contribution to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
- Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi pledged to contribute a total of 200 million dollars to the Fund when he visited the United States in June last year, and this is the first of this pledged contribution to be extended.
- Besides Japan, major countries have pledged to extend contributions to the Fund, including the US pledging 500 million dollars, Italy 200 million dollars, and the UK 200 million dollars. With contributions from the private sector, the pledged amount totals approximately 1,920 million dollars (as of the end of January this year).
- The Fund was established in January this year as an international foundation with its headquarters in Geneva, to provide financial support for programs/projects to prevent and treat AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in developing countries, on the basis of the agreement reached at the Genoa Summit in July last year.
