Japan's Additional Emergency Aid for the Earthquake Disaster in Turkey
(Emergency grant assistance and emergency material aid worth about two million dollars in total)

  1. On August 27 (Fri), the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency aid worth about two million dollars in total to the Republic of Turkey, as additional emergency aid for the country which was struck by an unprecedentedly large earthquake that left more than 39,000 casualties. This aid is composed of emergency grant assistance of one million dollars and emergency material aid worth about one million dollars (for generators, carpenters' kits, blankets, water tanks, etc.). Along with these emergency materials, food supplied by the businesses concerned, with the cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, will be also delivered by the same chartered plane.

  2. The present cooperation for grant assistance and material aid is an additional emergency aid following the dispatch of 63 members of the Japan Disaster Relief Team (rescue team, medical team and expert team) and the emergency aid totaling about one million dollars which is made up of emergency grant assistance and emergency material aid.

  3. It was also decided yesterday to dispatch an expert team of people with experience in the rehabilitation of the lifelines after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and a second medical team. Both teams will arrive in Turkey today, (27th).

  4. The Japanese Government is also considering to provide temporary housing, taking into account the needs of the Turkish side.

  5. The earthquake that hit the northwestern part of Turkey on August 17 has caused a much greater number of casualties and material damage than were first estimated. According to the Turkish Government, more than 12,000 people are already confirmed dead, more than 27,000 injured and a large number of people still missing. It is also estimated that 60,000 houses were damaged in the earthquake, leaving as many as 200,000 residents in the open without shelter.
