Mr. Seiichi Kondo, Deputy Director-General of the Economic Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to become a Deputy Secretary-General of the OECD

  1. By the decision of the Council of the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) on June 10, Mr. Seiichi Kondo, Deputy Director-General of the Economic Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is to assume office as Deputy Secretary-General of the OECD this September.

  2. Deputy Secretaries of the OECD are appointed by the Council based on the Secretary General's recommendation (for term of two years renewable). The current Deputy Secretaries are Ms. Joanna Shelton (U.S.A.), Mr. Kumiharu Shigehara (Japan), Mr. Thorvald Moe (Norway) and Mr. Herwig Schloegl (Germany). Mr. Kondo is to succeed Mr. Shigehara, whose tenure ends this August.

  3. The Secretariat of the OECD, which comprises 29 developed member countries, has a staff of just under 2,000 including 74 Japanese. The Secretary General is Mr. Donald James Johnston (Canada), who assumed office in June 1996 for his first term of five years.

  4. Mr. Kondo joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1972. He had previously served as Minister in the Embassy of Japan in the U.S., Deputy Director-General for General Affairs of the Economic Affairs Bureau.
