August 12, 1998

  1. On August 12 (Wed.), the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency aid of 200,000 dollars and 50,000 dollars respectively to the governments of the Republic of Kenya and the United Republic of Tanzania, which suffered heavy casualties from bombing attacks. The money will be used for the medical treatment and future rehabilitation of the victims.

  2. As of now, 209 people (including 12 Americans) are reported dead and about 4,800 injured in Kenya, and 10 people dead and 75 injured in Tanzania.

  3. The Government of Japan has already been cooperating in relief activities by dispatching a medical officer from the Japanese Embassy in Kenya, five doctors and a nurse stationed in Kenya as JICA experts, and two members of JOCV (one nurse and one health worker) to hospitals in Nairobi.

  4. The Government of Japan firmly maintains its stance of resolutely condemning all forms of terrorism in that it can never be justified for any reason. From this basic stance, the Government of Japan has decided to extend this emergency aid to relieve the victims of the terrorist attacks and to fulfill its responsibility as a member of the international community from a humanitarian point of view.
