1. On Saturday, August 27, commencing at 2:40 p.m. (local time; 8:40 p.m., Japan time) for approximately 10 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, who is visiting Nairobi, the Republic of Kenya to attend the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI), attended the SAA Seminar on Agriculture at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), and delivered an address (English (PDF)Open a New Window / Japanese (PDF)Open a New Window).

2. In his address, Prime Minister Abe expressed respect for the efforts of the SAAOpen a New Window, which is celebrating the 30th anniversary since its founding, while emphasizing the importance of empowering each and every farmer to make them independent, as well as the importance of building a value chain from production through to sale.

This side event was held by the Sasakawa Africa Association from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The main attendees were Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President, African Development Bank; and Mr. Yohei Sasakawa, Chairman, the Nippon Foundation. The attendees commemorated the 30th anniversary of the founding of the SAA, and discussed means for supporting social stability, women and young people through agriculture in Africa.
