Japan-Angola Summit Meeting

On August 20, commencing at 1:20p.m., for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with H.E. Mr. João Manuel Gonçalves LOURENÇO, President of the Republic of Angola, who is visiting Japan to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9). The overview of the meeting is as follows:
- At the outset, Prime Minister ISHIBA welcomed President Lourenço’s visit to Japan for the first time in two years and expressed his desire to continue working with President Lourenço, who serves as co-chair of TICAD 9, to ensure the success of TICAD 9 and strengthen the relationship between Japan and Africa. In response, President Lourenço stated that it is a great honor to serve as co-chair with Prime Minister ISHIBA, and that the relationship between Africa and Japan would lead to the development of Africa.
- Following that, Prime Minister ISHIBA expressed his expectation that Japanese companies will increase their investment in Angola based on the Japan-Angola Investment Agreement, which came into effect last year. In addition, Prime Minister ISHIBA, referring to the beginning of the yen loan project to strengthen the power grid, expressed his intention to continue to implement the infrastructure development projects including the improvement of the Namibe Port as well as to contribute to the diversification of Angola’s industries, which would lead to the future of Angola, through the assistance with Japan’s areas of expertise; such as satellite monitoring of mines, support for small-scale farmers along the Lobito Corridor, and the development of terrestrial digital broadcasting network.
- The two leaders also concurred to further strengthening cooperation in responding to various regional and international challenges, such as the situations in East Asia as well as the United Nations Security Council reform.
