Japan-Sudan Foreign Ministers’ Meeting


On August 27, commencing at 6:15 p.m., for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs, who was visiting Nairobi (Kenya) to attend the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI), held a Japan-Sudan Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with H.E. Prof. Ibrahim Ahmed Ghandour, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Sudan. The overview is as follows.
1. In his opening remarks, Foreign Minister Kishida expressed a heartfelt welcome to Foreign Minister Ghandour for his attendance at TICAD VI and his desire to work together for the success of this first TICAD in Africa. In response, Foreign Minister Ghandour conveyed his appreciation for Japan’s efforts to make TICAD a success and voiced his gratitude for Japan’s support given to Sudan in past years.
2. Foreign Minister Kishida noted the important role played by Sudan in regional stability and communicated Japan’s decisions to provide grant aid (3,151 million yen) to the Project for Improvement of Water Treatment Plant in Kosti City and grant aid(130 million yen) to equipment supply aimed at raising farmers’ incomes, and Foreign Minister Ghandour expressed his appreciation for these grants.
3. Furthermore, the two Ministers exchanged opinions on cooperation in the international arena, including United Nations Security Council reform.
