Japan-Comoros Summit Meeting

On August 21, commencing at 5:55 a.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with H.E. Mr. AZALI Assoumani, President of the Union of the Comoros, who is visiting Japan to participate in the in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9). The overview of the meeting is as follows:
- At the outset, Prime Minister ISHIBA welcomed President Azali's fifth visit to Japan and stated that, as maritime nations that benefit from the ocean, he would like to further develop relations between the two countries and work together to realize a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP). In response, President Azali congratulated the success of TICAD 9 that contributed to the development of both Japan and Africa. He also expressed his desire to further strengthen the cooperative relationship with Japan in order to co-create innovative solutions.
- Following that, Prime Minister ISHIBA conveyed his congratulations for the appointment of President Azali as Chair of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) and expressed his desire to strengthen cooperation with the IOC member countries, including the Comoros, in the areas of maritime security and disaster prevention. Furthermore, Prime Minister ISHIBA mentioned that Japan has also been supporting the strengthening of maritime law enforcement capabilities in East African countries, including the Comoros, through human resource development and support for the operation of patrol vessels. In response, President Azali extended his gratitude for Japan’s support to date, particularly in the field of human resource development. He also expressed his expectation for further support provided by Japan as well as investment from Japan.
