Japan-Ghana Relations
Visit of Mr. TANAKA Ryosei, Special Envoy of the Prime Minister, to the Republic of Ghana
From 6 to 8 January, Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru dispatched Mr. TANAKA Ryosei, Member of the House of Representatives of Japan (Member of Japan-Ghana Parliamentary Friendship League), to the Republic of Ghana for the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony of H.E. Mr. John Dramani MAHAMA, President of Ghana, as Special Envoy of Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru. The overview of the visit is as follows.
1. On 7 January, Special Envoy TANAKA attended the Inauguration Ceremony of President MAHAMA. The ceremony was attended by the dignitaries from various international organizations and countries including heads of state of African countries such as H.E. Mr. Bola TINUBU, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and H.E. Dr. William Samoei RUTO, President of the Republic of Kenya.
2. Mr. TANAKA held a brief talk with President MAHAMA and handed a letter from Prime Minister ISHIBA. Mr. TANAKA conveyed a congratulatory message from Prime Minister ISHIBA and the Prime Minister’s expectation on economic reform and desire to further strengthen bilateral relations through various fields. President MAHAMA expressed understanding of the need for economic reform and as well as hope for further strengthening of bilateral relations.
3. On 6 January, Mr. Tanaka paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Nana Addo Dankwa AKUFO-ADDO, former President of the Republic of Ghana (President at the time of the courtesy call) and expressed appreciation for contribution by the former President to the strengthening of bilateral relations between Japan and Ghana. On 8 January, Mr. Tanaka exchanged views with members of Japan-Ghana Parliamentary Friendship League.
4. In addition, Mr. TANAKA visited Noguchi Institute for Medical Research which Japan supports. At the Noguchi Institute, Mr. TANAKA received explanations that their research in West Africa on infectious disease conducted in cooperation with Japanese research institutes among others contributes to fight against infectious diseases not only in Ghana and neighboring countries, but also in the world.
