Japan-Gabon Relations

From May 2 to May 4, as Special Envoy of Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru, Mr. EJIMA Kiyoshi, Member of the House of Counselors of Japan (Member of Japan-African Union Parliamentary Friendship League) visited the Gabonese Republic for attending the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony of H.E. Mr. Brice Clotaire OLIGUI NGUEMA, President of Gabonese Republic. The overview of the visit is as follows.

  1. On May 3, Special Envoy Ejima attended the Inauguration Ceremony of President Oligui Nguema, which was held in Libreville. The ceremony was attended by the dignitaries from various international organizations and countries including heads of state of African countries. Mr. Ejima handed a letter from Prime Minister Ishiba at the venue of the ceremony and conveyed a congratulatory message. He also conveyed a congratulatory message regarding the lifting of the suspension of Gabon’s African Union membership and invited the President for TICAD 9 to be held in August this year in Yokohama, Japan. President Oligui Nguema expressed his gratitude to the dispatch of Special Envoy of Prime Minister and the invitation to TICAD 9.

  1. Furthermore, on May 4, Mr. Ejima met with President Oligui Nguema and expressed his hope for further enhancement of economic and social development through realizing inclusive governance. Mr. Ejima also conveyed willingness to further strengthen bilateral relations in broader areas, including the economic fields. President Oligui Nguema expressed his gratitude to Japan for its continued support and expressed hope for further strengthening of bilateral relations.

  1. On May 4, Mr. Ejima met with five ministers including H.E. Ms. Camélia NTOUTOUME-LECLERCQ, Minister of State, Minister of National Education and Civic Instruction and discussed how to strengthen bilateral relations.

  1. In addition, Mr. Ejima visited the Libreville Micro Fishery Support Center, which are supported by Japan. At the center, he received explanations that Japan’s assistance has greatly contributed to efficient trade of fishery products and improvement of the working environment for people. He also met JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) officials and volunteers as well as Japanese businessmen residing in Gabon and expressed his hope that each activity will contribute to development of the bilateral relations between Japan and Gabon.
