On June 17, commencing at 12:35 p.m. local time (3:35 p.m. on June 18, JST) for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, who is visiting Canada to attend the G7 Leaders’ Summit, held a Japan-Australia Summit Meeting with the Hon. Anthony Albanese, MP, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Australia. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister Ishiba stated that Japan-Australia cooperation serves as a model for collaboration among like-minded countries amidst increasingly complex strategic environments. The two leaders then affirmed their willingness to elevate the ‘Special Strategic Partnership’ between Japan and Australia to even greater heights in light of the 50th anniversary in 2026 of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation.
  2. The two leaders exchanged views on the security environment and overall strategic challenges in the Indo-Pacific region, including the situations in East Asia, and concurred on further strengthening cooperation.
  3. The two leaders also affirmed the importance of deepening strategic cooperation between Japan and Australia, while promoting multi-layered cooperation with allies and other like-minded countries, recognizing the close interlinkage of security in Europe, the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific region.
