On June 5, Ms. IKUINA Akiko, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, attended the port call reception for the Royal Australian Navy destroyer Sydney, hosted by the Ambassador of Australia to Japan in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture.

The destroyer conducted monitoring and surveillance activities against illicit maritime activities, including ship-to-ship transfers with North Korean-flagged vessels prohibited by the United Nations Security Council Resolutions, in the waters surrounding Japan from mid to late May prior to its port call.

Japan and Australia, as the central pillar of the coordination among like-minded countries, are strengthening security cooperation to contribute to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific. Through the attendance of Parliamentary Vice-Minister IKUINA at this port call event, Japan reaffirmed its commitment to further enhancing cooperation between Japan and Australia.
