Japan-Australia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On May 26, commencing at 11:50 a.m. (3:20 p.m. on May 26, Japan time) for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Delhi, India, to attend the Japan-Australia-India-U.S. (Quad) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, held a Japan-Australia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with Senator the Hon. Penny WONG, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia.
- At the outset, Minister MOTEGI stated that Prime Minister TAKAICHI’s visit to Australia earlier this month was highly significant, as it confirmed concrete bilateral cooperation across a wide range of fields, including economic security and security, and would serve as a foundation for further initiatives going forward.
- The two ministers welcomed the launch of the “Japan-Australia Strategic Consultations” and the “Japan-Australia Diplomatic Exchange Program” to mark the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Japan and Australia.
- The two ministers concurred on following up the outcomes of Prime Minister TAKAICHI’s visit to Australia. They also exchanged views on regional affairs in the Indo-Pacific, including the Pacific Island countries and Southeast Asia, and concurred on the importance of maintaining close communication going forward.
