Japan-North Korea Relations

On November 13, commencing around 4:30 p.m. local time (the same day, 6:30 p.m. Japan time) for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, who is visiting Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to attend the ASEAN-related Summit Meetings, held a Japan-U.S.-ROK Summit Meeting with the Honorable Joseph R. Biden, Jr., President of the United States of America and H.E. Mr. YOON Suk Yeol, President of the Republic of Korea (ROK). The overview of the meeting is as follows.

After the meeting, a Japan-U.S.-ROK Joint Leaders’ Statement [Provisional translation(PDF)/English(PDF)] was issued.

The three leaders shared the recognition that bilateral and trilateral cooperation among Japan, the U.S., and the ROK is becoming increasingly important in the face of North Korea’s provocations which are unprecedented both in their frequency and their manner, and a looming possibility of further provocations. They concurred to continue to work together bilaterally and trilaterally among Japan, the U.S., and the ROK and to take resolute actions toward the complete denuclearization of North Korea in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions, including on enhancement of regional deterrence, such as security cooperation among Japan, the U.S., and the ROK.
