On October 30, commencing at 6 p.m. for approximately 45 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, held a bilateral meeting with H.E. Mr. LEE Jae Myung, President of the Republic of Korea (ROK), during her visit to Gyeongju, the ROK for the APEC Leaders’ Meetings. The summary of the bilateral meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that the importance of the Japan-ROK relations and the coordination among Japan, the U.S. and the ROK has grown even more. Prime Minister TAKAICHI expressed her intention to work closely with President Lee in a wide range of fields.
  2. The two leaders had a candid exchange of views on the overall Japan-ROK relations. While acknowledging that there are various issues on which their positions differ due to their proximity as neighboring countries, the two leaders concurred to manage these issues through their leadership and to develop the Japan-ROK relations in a future-oriented and stable manner, based on the foundation of the Japan-ROK relations which has been established since the normalization of the Japan-ROK relations.
  3. Prime Minister TAKAICHI pointed out the importance of close coordination between Japan and the ROK as well as among Japan, the ROK and the U.S. toward the complete denuclearization of North Korea and the immediate resolution of the abductions issue.
  4. The two leaders welcomed the meaningful exchange of views in person shortly after Prime Minister TAKAICHI’s assumption of office. The two leaders concurred to actively promote the two leaders’ “shuttle diplomacy” and to continue close communication between the two governments.
