On January 28, commencing at shortly after 5:30 p.m. for approximately 1 hour, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, who is visiting Beijing, the People's Republic of China, held a meeting with State Council Member Yang Jiechi for the first time. The overview is as follows.

Minister Kono stressed the necessity of continuous efforts to realize the leaders' mutual visits at an early date, utilizing the momentum created by his visit to China this time. There was a positive response from State Council Member Yang Jiechi. Both sides confirmed that it is beneficial not only for the people of both countries but for the region and the international society to build the stable relationship of peace, friendship and cooperation, following the spirit of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Japan and China.

Furthermore, they exchanged views on the importance of economic cooperation and the promotion of sports exchanges on the occasion of the Olympics.
