Japan and the Republic of the Fiji Islands have been enjoying friendly and cooperative relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1970. Such relations have been developed through exchange of visits, Japan's economic cooperation, etc.
The Republic of the Fiji Islands is the second largest country among the Pacific island countries, next to Papua New Guinea. It has a well established Government and it is geographically placed at the centre of the South Pacific region. Many international/regional organizations and diplomatic corps, including the Japanese Embassy which is also accredited to several neighboring countries, are based in Fiji. Japan and Fiji have been enjoying very friendly and cooperative relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1970. Japan has been extending its economic cooperation to Fiji, and ministerial visits are frequent between the two countries. Fiji is known for her natural beauty such as blue coral sea and clear sky. 35 to 45 thousand Japanese people visit Fiji every year for sightseeing or business.
