Your Majesty,

During my visit this time, I have strengthened my impression that your country, while respecting tradition, maintains a high economic standard and enjoys peace and prosperity. I have also been deeply impressed with the palace and mosques which radiate against the background of beautiful forests, epitomising harmony between nature and modernisation. Furthermore, I have really recognised the meaning of the word "Darussalam" in the name of your country, which signifies "abode of peace". I would like to renew my respect for Your Majesty's prominent leadership over the past twenty-nine years since your coronation, and to the endeavours of the government and the people of Brunei Darussalam for your nation-building.

Both Japan and Brunei Darussalam have a long history of rich tradition. We also have a similarity in having actively engaged in maritime trade, overcoming the geographical restrains imposed by a small land area. I am aware that there is evidence, supported by the research of a scholar, that at the beginning of the 17th century, Japanese trading ships, authorised by the "Shogunate", sailed through the rough waters of the South China Sea and called at ports in this part of Borneo Island. If this is true, Japan and Brunei Darussalam have already had a trading relationship for over four hundred years.

In recent years, on the basis of mutually beneficial economic ties, our two countries have developed a wide scope of close and friendly cooperative relations, not only in the economic field but also in the exchanges of youth and various cultural activities.

This evening, I have been given an opportunity to have meaningful bilateral talks with Your Majesty, not only on the means to strengthen our bilateral relationship, but also on a wide range of international issues.

I am confident that we will develop our existing friendly and mutually cooperative relations even further as neighbours in Asia and as partners in regional development.

Your Majesty,

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of ASEAN. Two years ago, your country exerted a prominent leadership as the Chairman of ASEAN and, recognising the importance of regional cooperation, has been playing an important role in achieving political stability and economic development in the ASEAN region.

A closer partnership between Japan and ASEAN is becoming increasingly important as we approach the 21st century. I believe that such closer cooperation will unleash the energy for peace and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and in the international community as a whole.

Your majesty and distinguished guests, I would like to conclude my speech by wishing Your Majesty and the people of Brunei Darussalam further prosperity, happiness and success, as well as an everlasting friendly relationship between our two countries.

Thank you.
