Visit of State Minister for Foreign Affairs FUJII to Tajikistan

From May 29 to 31, Mr. FUJII Hisayuki, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, visited Dushanbe in the Republic of Tajikistan to attend the High-Level International Conference on Glaciers' Preservation. The overview of the visit is as follows.

1. Overview of attendance at the High-Level International Conference on Glaciers' Preservation

  1. On 30 May, State Minister Fujii attended the High-Level International Conference on Glaciers' Preservation in Dushanbe on behave of the Government of Japan. The conference was attended by H.E. Mr. Emomali Rahmon, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, who delivered the keynote speech, as well as heads of governments or ministers from countries interested in glacier conservation, and representatives of United Nation’s organizations and Multilateral Development Banks.
  2. At the plenary session of the conference, State Minister Fujii delivered a statement, expressing his respect for the initiative of the Government of Tajikistan, which has been actively addressing various issues related to glaciers, and expressed his hope that Japan will share its knowledge and technology accumulated in the fields of climate change countermeasures and water resource management with other countries.

2. Meetings with Tajikistan Government Officials

  1. On 31 May, State Minister Fujii held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Sirojiddin MUHRIDDIN, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, and exchanged views on bilateral relations. Minister Muhriddin highly appreciated State Minister Fujii's attendance at the High-Level International Conference on Glaciers' Preservation and expressed his willingness to develop bilateral relations in many aspects. State Minister Fujii stated that Tajikistan is an important partner in building free and open international order based on the rule of law. He also expressed his willingness to promote bilateral cooperation in various fields such as politics, economy, environment, science and technology, and culture.
    Both sides agreed to cooperate toward the realization of the Summit Meeting of "Central Asia plus Japan" Dialogue.
  2. On the same day, State Minister Fujii paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Hokim KHOLIQZODA, First Deputy Prime-Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan. Both sides confirmed their commitment to further strengthening Japan-Tajikistan relations in various fields such as politics, economy, environment, science and technology, culture, including Tajikistan's participation in the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. Both sides also agreed to cooperate toward the realization of the Summit Meeting of "Central Asia + Japan".
  3. On the same day, State Minister Fujii held a meeting with Mr. Bahodur SHERALIZODA, Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan. Both sides exchanged views on bilateral relations, including in the environmental field.
  4. On 30 May, State Minister Fujii held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Sharif HAKIMZODA, Chairman of the Tajikistan-Japan Parliamentary Friendship League, and exchanged views on bilateral relations. Chairman Hakimzoda expressed his welcome and his hope to further promote inter-parliamentary exchanges.

3. Meetings with high-level representatives of governments of other countries and international organizations

  1. On 30 May, State Minister Fujii held a meeting with H.E. Charygeldi BABANIYAZOV, Minister of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan.
    State Minister Fujii referred to the visit to Japan by H.E. Mr. Serdar BERDIMUHAMEDOV, President of Turkmenistan for participation to Turkmenistan’s National Day of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan in April, and expressed his willingness to further strengthen bilateral relations, including in the field of the environment.
  2. On the same day, State Minister Fujii held a meeting with H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
    State Minister Fujii expressed his hope that bilateral relations would further advance through the visit to Japan by H.E. Mr. Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia. Minister Sophaleth expressed gratitude for Japan's support to date and expressed his intention to advance cooperation in the environmental field.
  3. On the same day, State Minister Fujii held talks with H.E. Mr. Shavkat KHAMRAEV, Minister of Water Resources of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Both sides agreed to advance bilateral cooperation in the water field.
  4. On the same day, State Minister Fujii held talks with H.E. Mr. Aziz ABDUKHAKIMOV, Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan. State Minister Fujii stated that it is encouraging that Minister Abdukhakimov, who studied in Japan and is fluent in Japanese, serves as a cabinet minister in Uzbekistan. Both sides agreed to further strengthen bilateral relations in areas such as the environment and tourism.
  5. In addition, State Minister Fujii exchanged views with many participants, including the following dignitaries.

4. Development Cooperation-related Events

  1. On 31 May, State Minister Fujii laid a wreath at the United Nations Office in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, in memory of Mr. AKINO Yutaka, Political Officer of the United Nations Mission of Observers in Tajikistan (UNMOT) and other United Nations staff members who lost their lives while on duty in 1998.
  2. On the same day, State Minister Fujii attended the handover ceremony for “The Project for the Improvement of Medical Equipment For the State Institution of Republican Educational and Clinical Center of Family Medicine” under Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects. State Minister Fujii stated that the health sector is one of the most important areas of bilateral cooperation between Japan and Tajikistan, and expressed his hope that this support will contribute to Tajikistan's sustainable development and strengthen the friendship between Japan and Tajikistan. The Republican Educational and Clinical Center of Family Medicine provided an explanation of the donated equipment and expressed its gratitude.
  3. On the same day, State Minister Fujii visited the Tajikistan National Archives in Dushanbe and inspected the use of equipment provided through Cultural Grant Assistance.
