On January 19, the Agreement between Japan and the Republic of Austria on Social Security (hereinafter referred to as “Agreement”) was signed in Tokyo between Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, and H.E. Dr. Elisabeth Bertagnoli, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Austria to Japan.

  1. As for employees temporarily sent from Japan to the Republic of Austria as well as those temporarily sent from the Republic of Austria to Japan, there are currently problems such as being subject to compulsory coverage under the pension systems of both countries. The Agreement is aimed for solving these problems. Under this Agreement, the employees temporarily sent for a period of five years or less from either country to the other will be covered in principle, only by the systems such as the pension system of the former country. The Agreement will also enable those employees to establish eligibility to receive pension benefits by totalizing the periods of the coverage of both countries.
  2. It is expected that the conclusion of this Agreement will reduce the burden imposed on companies and employees, thereby further facilitates people-to-people and economic exchanges between Japan and the Republic of Austria.
