Public Relations Abroad

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan makes every effort to provide not only information relating to Japan's foreign policy but also general information on Japanese politics, economy, society, and culture through various means in order to promote accurate understanding of Japan overseas and to cultivate a favorable image of and sense of affinity toward Japan. These measures include speeches and lectures by staff of Japan's overseas diplomatic establishments, including Ambassadors and Consuls-General; contributions to and appearances in local media by such staff; publication of newsletters and other information overseas in the local language; holding of events introducing Japan; invitation of opinions leaders and television teams from foreign countries to Japan; dispatch of Japanese intellectuals to international symposiums and conferences that are influential in the formation of international public opinion; and supply of printed matter and audiovisual materials in foreign languages. In addition, the Foreign Ministry conducts surveys on such topics as the image of Japan and interest in Japan in other countries and analyzes the results so as to implement effective overseas public relations.

Furthermore, as part of the Japanese government's Visit Japan Campaign aimed at making Japan a tourism-oriented country, the Foreign Ministry encourages foreign travelers to come to Japan by publicizing the attractions of the country and supporting bids to host international meetings in Japan.
