Press Conference 19 July 2002

  1. Violence in the State of Israel
  2. Emergency assistance to the Republic of Peru

  1. Violence in the State of Israel

Deputy Press Secretary Joji Hisaeda: Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. I have a few announcements to make today.

The first one is in regard to a series of violent acts in the State of Israel. Concerning the suicide bombing in Tel Aviv on the night of July 18, we express our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and heartfelt sympathy to the injured.

Terrorism cannot be justified for whatever reason. We feel indignation at and resolutely condemn such an act of terrorism aimed at innocent civilians. Also, Japan feels indignant over a series of violent acts targeting ordinary citizens. It is extremely unfortunate that these incidents occurred when serious efforts are being made by the international community to achieve peace.

Japan once again strongly urges Chairman Arafat and the Palestinian Interim Authority to make utmost efforts to crack down against extremists and hopes that the Israeli government will exercise maximum restraint.

  2. Emergency assistance to the Republic of Peru

Mr. Hisaeda: My second announcement is on emergency assistance for damage caused by a cold wave in the Republic of Peru. On July 18, responding to the request from the Government of the Republic of Peru, the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency assistance in kind, which is equivalent to approximately 13 million yen, comprising tents, blankets, and plastic sheeting as emergency aid to the Government of the Republic of Peru, which has sustained damage from a cold wave.

The Government of Japan made this decision from a humanitarian point of view, taking into account the seriousness of the disaster and the friendly relations between Japan and Peru.
