Japan's Recognition of the Republic of Kosovo as an Independent State

Q: Serbia decided to recall its Ambassador to Japan upon Japan's recognition of Kosovo as an independent state. What is Japan's position on this decision?

A: We are aware that Serbian Ambassador, H.E. Mr. Ivan Mrkic has been called back to Serbia for consultations with the Serbian government in response to Japan's recognition of Kosovo as an independent state.

On March 18, 2008, Serbian Ambassador, H.E. Mr. Ivan Mrkic called on Mr. Chikahito Harada, Director-General of the European Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to convey the Serbian government's protest against Japan's recognition of Kosovo as an independent state.

In response, Director-General Harada expressed that Japan has no intention to make its recognition of Kosovo impede the traditionally friendly relations with Serbia and stressed his hope that such friendly relations with Serbia will be continued.

Q: Is Japan going to recall its Ambassador in return?

A: Japan has no intention of recalling its Ambassador.
