Myanmar's Announcement of a National Referendum on a New Constitution and General Elections
Q: What is Japan's position on the announcement by the Government of Myanmar to hold a national referendum on a new constitution in May 2008 and general elections in 2010?
A: Japan considers this announcement to be a development. We deem it important that the Government of Myanmar ensure that the democratization process be an inclusive and open one leading to peaceful national reconciliation in accordance with the announced schedule.
Japan fully supports the UN Secretary-General's good offices efforts, including the mission by Special Advisor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari.
