Visit to Japan by President Rosalyn Higgins, International Court of Justice (ICJ)

April 3, 2007

1.  President Rosalyn Higgins, International Court of Justice (ICJ), will be invited as a guest of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan from April 9 (Mon) to 15 (Sun).

2.  During her stay, President Higgins will meet with the chief justice of the Supreme Court and key officials of the Government of Japan, and deliver a speech at the United Nations University.  She will also exchange views with intellectuals in Kyoto and Hiroshima.

3.  The visit of President Higgins from the ICJ, which is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, is expected to further deepen Japan’s understanding of the ICJ’s activities, and show to the international community Japan’s diplomatic policy to promote the “Rule of Law” in the international arena as part of its “Value-oriented Diplomacy.”
