Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura to Attend the 16th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministerial Meeting and the International Ministerial Meeting of the Neighboring Countries of Iraq and the G8 and Chile

  1. Mr. Nobutaka Machimura, Foreign Minister, will visit Santiago, Chile, from November 16 (Tue) to 18 (Thu) to attend the 16th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministerial Meeting. After that Mr. Machimura will visit Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, from November 22 (Mon) to 23 (Tue) to attend the International Meeting of the Neighboring Countries of Iraq and the G8.

  2. At the APEC Ministerial Meeting, Mr. Machimura will exchange views with participating ministers on such issues as the "World Trade Organization (WTO)," "Trade and Investment Liberalization and Facilitation," "Free Trade Agreements," "Structural Reform," and "Enhancing Human Security" including counter-terrorism and non-proliferation issues.

  3. At the International Meeting of the Neighboring Countries of Iraq and the G8, Mr. Machimura will exchange views with participants on how to secure a trend toward the stability in Iraq by advancing Iraq's political process in accordance with U.N.S.C. resolutions including holding National Assembly elections by the end of January 2005.

  4. At these meetings, Mr. Machimura will exchange views with participating ministers on bilateral relations, the Iraqi situation and other issues.

  5. On the way to Egypt, Mr. Machimura will exchange views in France and the U.K., on which are major G8 members and permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and have valuable expertise in the Middle East region including Iraq.

  6. Taking part in the APEC Ministerial Meeting will be foreign ministers and others from 21 APEC economies (Australia; Brunei Darussalam; Canada; Chile; China; Hong Kong (China); Indonesia; Japan; Korea; Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; Papua New Guinea; Peru; the Philippines; the Russian Federation; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; United States; and Viet Nam).

  7. Participating in the International Ministerial Meeting of the Neighboring Countries of Iraq and the G8 will be foreign ministers, or secretaries general, etc. of Egypt (chair), Jordan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Kuwait, the G8 countries, China, Tunisia, Algeria, Bahrain, Malaysia, the Netherlands, the U.N., Arab League, OIC, and the EU.
