Visit to Japan of The Right Honourable Anthony Blair, M.P., Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and Mrs. Blair

- The Right Honourable Anthony Charles Lynton Blair, M.P.,
Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and
Northern Ireland, with Mrs. Blair, will visit Japan from
January 9 (Fri.) to 13 (Tue.). This is Mr. Blair's first
visit to Japan as Prime Minister; he visited Japan in
January 1996 as the leader of the Labour Party.
- During their stay in Japan, the Prime Minister and Mrs.
Blair will be received in audience by Their Majesties The
Emperor and Empress of Japan. Mr. Blair will also have
summit talks with Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto.
- Because the UK has taken up the Presidency of the
European Union, Prime Minister Blair, Mr. Jacques Santer,
President of the European Commission, and Prime Minister
Hashimoto will have Japan-EU summit talks.
- A year-long "Festival UK 98" intended to
introduce British culture in general to Japan, will be
opened during Mr. and Mrs. Blair's stay in Japan.
