Osaka, which has thrived as a gateway linking Japan with Asia since the ancient days when it was known as Naniwazu, has built up a long history of deep exchanges with the Asian continent that stretches back over 1,400 years.

Kansai International Airport (KIX), which can be considered as a modern version of Naniwazu, is the first international hub airport in Japan to be equipped with two long-distance runways and designed for 24-hour round-the-clock operation. KIX is a sky gateway with an ample network of overseas connections. The current schedule of regular international flights (for the 2007-2008 winter season) lists 795 flights to and from 70 cities in 28 countries. In particular, there are flights between KIX and 17 cities in China, the largest number for any airport in Japan, and more than half of all air cargo moving between the two countries now passes through this one airport.

Osaka follows Tokyo as Japan's number-two location in terms of the number of foreign hotel guests. Osaka continues to attract people from all over the world, and to maintain exchanges with these people.
