With its four sharply distinct seasons, breathtaking nature, delicious fresh food, and abundant spas, Hokkaido has an unending attraction for tourists. Many visitors from overseas as well as from all parts of Japan flock to the prefecture to: 1) view or take part in its spectacular festivals such as the Sapporo Yuki Matsuri (Snow Festival) and the Yosakoi Soran Matsuri; 2) to get close to nature in the Shiretoko area, which was listed as a World Natural Heritage site in July 2005; or 3) to experience the unique animal action exhibition at Asahiyama Zoo.
