on co-operation in humanitarian field about the deceased Japanese detainees between the Government of Japan and the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan

On the occasion of President Islam Abduganievich Karimov of Uzbekistan’s visit to Japan, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Yoriko Kawaguchi and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov issued the following Joint Announcement on Co-operation in humanitarian field about the Japanese citizens, who were detained in Uzbekistan during the Soviet period.
The Government of Japan, pointing out the fact that bereaved families of these Japanese detainee invariably wish to bring detainee’s remains back to Japan, expected the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan to understand their wishes.
The Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan, taking into consideration the expectation of the Japanese side, expressed its readiness to make cooperation if the Japanese side request the gathering of the remains.
The Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan, expressed its intention to maintain the graveyard of Japanese dead in Uzbekistan adequately.
The Government of Japan, affirmatively appreciated the position of the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the maintenance of the graveyard of the Japanese detainee, who were buried in the Republic by the Republic of Uzbekistan.
In this regards the Government of Japan, remembering all of the deceased Japanese detainee in the Republic of Uzbekistan after the World War II, praying for the peace, and for the purpose of developing permanent friendship and goodwill between Japan and the Republic of Uzbekistan, expressed its intention to build a memorial for the dead in their detention, and the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan welcomed this.
