Kids from Salt Lake
City Cheer on American Skiers (February
19)
A group of schoolchildren from Salt Lake
City, which will host the 2002 Olympic
Winter Games, were on hand to watch
Americans capture the gold medal in both
men's and women's competition in
freestyle skiing aerials on February 18.
Twenty-eight seventh graders were
invited to Nagano as junior ambassadors
after winning an essay contest sponsored
by the Salt Lake City Games organizing
committee. The contest attracted more
than 5,000 entries from the state of
Utah.
The kids cheered on American skiers
with megaphones and flags, chanting
"USA! USA!" every time an
American skier performed well.
"Good job!" exclaimed one
of the students about the American team's
strong showing.
"I've always wanted to see Nikki
(Stone) win the gold," added
another, "and I'm really happy she
did it."
The leader of the group of students
said he hoped the Nagano visit would
prove to be an exciting one, enabling the
kids to learn not only about the Winter
Olympics but also about the life and
culture of Japan. (Shinano Mainichi
