Low-Polluting
Vehicles to Shuttle Athletes, Officials,
and Spectators In order to keep
car emissions low at and around Olympic
venues, athletes and officials will be
transported in low-emission vehicles.
These vehicles are friendlier to the
environment than gasoline-powered cars,
which give off a lot of nitrogen oxide
and heat-trapping carbon dioxide. There
will be 60 cars that run on natural gas,
41 "hybrid" buses using a
combination of electricity and diesel
fuel, and 3 electric cars. The total of
104 ecology-conscious vehicles to be used
at the Nagano Games is more than at any
of the previous Games.
The hybrid buses will also be used to
shuttle spectators to and from Olympic
venues and various locations in the city
of Nagano. Low-emission vehicles are
still a rarity in Japan, and organizers
hope they will attract a lot of attention
from Olympic visitors.
