Recyclable Plates at
Olympic Restaurants Out of
environmental considerations, the
restaurants and cafeteria at the Olympic
Village and related facilities will use
recyclable paper plates made from
apples--or rather, from the fibers and
pulp remaining after the juice is pressed
from them. Other dishes will be made
using potato starch and other natural
ingredients. Apples are a famous product
of the Nagano region. The Games will
likely provide a good opportunity to make
them known to the world.
The apple-based plates will be 25%
fruit fiber and 75% ordinary paper pulp.
A total of 900,000 are being made, with a
diameter of 23 centimeters (9 inches) for
the biggest and 18 centimeters (7 inches)
for medium-sized dishes. After use, these
plates can be recycled as solid fuel, as
base material for recycled paper, or as
fertilizer. The dishes made of potato
starch are fully biodegradable and
friendly to the environment.
