Pulp from Nagano's famous apples is used to make the plates.

About a quarter of the material used to make the plates is apple; the rest is paper pulp. Some dishes are being made with potato starch. About 900,000 plates are being made for the Games; after use, they can be burned as solid fuel, used to make recycled paper, or turned into fertilizer. The potato dishes can be composted after use--they return right to the earth. There might even be some dishes made from rice!
