Y2K Status in Japan

Y2K Computer Problem Center of the Prime Minister's Official Residence

1. As of 20:00, 3 January 2000, no serious problems related to the Y2K issue had occurred.

2. Concerning the five critical sectors of finance, energy, telecommunications, transportation and medical care, on 3 January there was one new report of an abnormality (a temporary malfunction of a part of LAN in a ministry) submitted to the Y2K Computer Problem Center of the Prime Minister's Official Residence by related government ministries and agencies. This brought the total of incidents reported since 1 January 2000 to 24.

Of these 24 incidents, a total of 11 can be attributed to Y2K, which remains unchanged from yesterday. (See Attached Note)

3. The Y2K Computer Problem Center of the Prime Minister's Official Residence will continue to be vigilant in monitoring the situation.

Note: As of 20:00 2 January 2000, 23 incidents since 1 January 2000 were reported, out of which a total of 11 can be attributed to Y2K.

a) Reports first made on 2 January (A total of one)
- At one foreign bank, it was reported that there was a possibility that corporate client transaction information had been deleted.

b) As of 1 January, the cause of the following incidents had not been confirmed. On 2 January they were confirmed as being Y2K related. (A total of four, all have been resolved)
- Anomaly in the Safety Parameter Display system in Unit One Shika Nuclear Reactor of Hokuriku Electric Co., Ltd.
- Malfunction in the data display of the Ishikawa Prefecture Monitoring System.
- Anomaly in the time display of the operation control and monitoring system of the High-level Radioactive Waste Storage Control Center at Rokkasho Village of Japan Nuclear Fuel Ltd.
- Some anomalies in fax-based information retrieval services operated by Recruit Co., Ltd.

c) Incidents that were identified as being Y2K related on 1 January. (A total of six, all have been resolved.)
