Japan-Central America Year 2005

Exchange of messages between Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and the presidents of five Central American countries on the occasion of the 70th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Central America

  1. On February 22, Senior Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Shuzen Tanigawa received a visit by Ambassador Carlos Manuel Zeron of the Republic of Honduras, Ambassador Jose Ricardo Paredes Osorio of the Republic of El Salvador, Ambassador Arturo Duarte of the Republic of Guatemala, Ambassador Harry Bodan Shields of the Republic of Nicaragua and charge d'Affaires ad interim Jorge Enrique Valerio Hernandez of the Republic of Costa Rica. The meeting took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where Senior Vice-Minister Tanigawa was presented with congratulatory messages from the president of each of the five countries, respectively, which address Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi regarding the 70th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between their countries and Japan.

    Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs Itsunori Onodera attended the commemorative ceremony held in Guatemala and handed President Oscar Jose Rafael Berger Perdomo the congratulatory message from Prime Minister Koizumi. Representative of the Government of Japan Tatsuo Arima, who was on a tour of Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and Costa Rica, attended ceremonies in each of the countries of his visit commemorating the 70th anniversary since the establishment of their diplomatic relations with Japan, and presented the congratulatory message from Prime Minister Koizumi to the president of the respective countries.

  2. The year 2005 has been designated the Japan-Central America Year 2005, as it marks the 70th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and the five Central American countries mentioned above, and those five countries together with Panama and Belize host the Central America Joint Pavilion at the Expo 2005 Aichi (Exposition of Global Harmony) as members of Central American Integration System (Sistema de Integracion Centroamericana: SICA). Various commemorative events are scheduled to take place. (In addition to the abovementioned seven countries, the Dominican Republic, which is an associate member of SICA, will also participate in the Japan-Central America Year 2005.)
