  1. On May 11, 2004, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi sent a message of condolence to Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende of the Kingdom of the Netherlands on the death of a Dutch soldier and another injured in the attack on the Dutch military unit that occurred in the central part of Samawa, Iraq. In his message, Prime Minister Koizumi expressed his condolences to the Government of the Netherlands and the bereaved family, and also that he highly evaluates the contribution the Netherlands has made in Iraq and that he wishes to continue working together for the reconstruction of Iraq.

On May 11, 2004, Minister for Foreign Affairs Yoriko Kawaguchi sent a message of condolence to Minister of Foreign Affairs Bernard Bot of the Kingdom of the Netherlands on the death of a Dutch soldier and another injured in the attack on the Dutch military unit that occurred in the central part of Samawa, Iraq. In her message, Foreign Minister Kawaguchi expressed her deepest condolences to the Government of the Netherlands and the bereaved family on the ultimate sacrifice of a Dutch soldier who, driven by respectable ideals, had engaged in his duty for the reconstruction of Iraq while building cooperative relations with the local people, and she wished for an early recovery of the injured.
