Negotiations to Start on Japan-Vietnam Economic Partnership Agreement

1. On October 19 (Thu), Mr. Nguyen Tan Dung, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, who is now visiting Japan, and Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, held a Japan-Vietnam summit meeting and signed a Japan-Vietnam joint statement.
2. The joint statement says that the two leaders have decided to start negotiations on a Japan-Vietnam Economic Partnership Agreement on the basis of the results of the past meetings of the Joint Study Group. The first round will be held in January 2007.
