Japan-Cambodia Foreign Ministers' Telephone Talk
On December 23, Minister for Foreign Affairs Koichiro Gemba had a telephone talk with H.E. Mr. Hor Namhong, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia for approximately 15 minutes from 7 p.m.

Foreign Minister Gemba started the talk by expressing his regret that he had been obliged to postpone his visit to Cambodia and stated that it was unfortunate. He then conveyed the following points that he was planning to share during his trip to Cambodia. He highly praised the political stability and economic development that Cambodia has achieved over the 20 years since the Paris Peace Agreement and stated that Japan will continue to support Cambodia's development efforts. As part of such support, he made a pledge to extend a yen loan (maximum amount of 7.161 billion yen) for the Siem Reap Water Supply Expansion Project and also mentioned that Japan was currently considering the possibility of implementing the fourth phase of the Project for Improvement of the National Road No.1. Deputy Prime Minister Hor Namhong expressed his gratitude for Japan's support and said that he hopes that Foreign Minister Gemba will pay a visit to Cambodia sometime early in the near future.
- Cambodia serving as ASEAN Chair in 2012
Both ministers agreed to collaborate and cooperate closely toward the success of ASEAN meetings in 2012 under the chairmanship of Cambodia.
- North Korea
Foreign Minister Gemba stated that he thinks it is important that the death of Kim Jong-il, Chairman of the National Defense Commission of North Korea, would not have a negative impact on peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
