Most activities of the project, which is worth US$ 2 million, were preparatory in nature. The Project document was submitted for approval and signature by the Regional Center on Small Arms (RECSA), the Government of Kenya and UNDP Kenya in October-November 2009. It was finally signed in December 2009 by the Government of Kenya. Key project outputs include existing institutions in the fight against the proliferation of illicit SALW strengthened; stockpile management enhanced; information on practical disarmament generated and disseminated; and capacity of RECSA developed to ensure better programme development and implementation.
The Steering Committee of the project held its first meeting on January 21, 2010 and a workplan for first quarter of 2010( February- April) was approved.
The kick-off ceremony of the projects is scheduled on 19 April 2010 , followed by 2day regional meeting on practical disarmament. For the establishment on Database on small arms, software procurement is under way. Selections of Consultants who will be in charge of base-line assessment for practical disarmament and project staffs are on-going.
